Welcome to Comly!
Message From the Principal
Dear Comly Families,
I would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer; and that your children are excited to come back to school and are ready to learn on September 3rd. We will meet in the school yard the first day of school for teachers to pick up their classes at 8:25am.
I would like to introduce the new members of our school community. We welcome Ms. Katie Hughes to the kindergarten team; Ms. Hannah Levine, Ms. Marimar Rodriguez and Ms. Madison Toner to the 1st grade team; Mr. McKenna Fiedler to the 4th grade team; Ms. Hannah Cochrane and Mr. Andrew Hollister to the 5th grade team, Ms. Juliann Walsh to the autistic support team, and Ms. Roksana Potocki to our ESL team. As always, all members of the Comly school team are here to support you and your children. Please do not hesitate to reach out at any time.
We have some exciting updates to the building as our enrollment continues to increase. We now have a brand new music room and ESOL room.
There are several policies that I would like to share with you. More details can be found in the Family Handbook as well.
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds – With partnerships like Fuel Up to Play and the Hype Council, Comly has made the commitment to focus on educating our students about healthy habits. With this in mind, cupcakes and other sugary and/or high calorie foods will not be permitted for birthday celebrations this school year. Instead, we recommend the following alternatives if you wish for your child to celebrate his/her birthday with their class:
● Donate a book to the classroom library
● Bring a healthy snack to enjoy during lunch (see the reverse side of this letter for suggestions)
● Non-food objects such as pencils, stickers, erasers, etc.
*Arrival/Late Passes – School starts at 8:25AM daily. All students will enter through the student entrance in the schoolyard. Late passes will be issued from the student entrance from 8:26AM-9:00AM daily. Any student arriving late after 9:00AM should enter through the main entrance on Kelvin Ave. and must report to the main office to obtain a late pass.
*Breakfast – Breakfast is served from 8:00AM-8:15AM daily. All students receive free breakfast (and lunch) in the School District of Philadelphia.
*Dismissal – Kindergarten students are dismissed daily at 2:50PM from their classrooms. All 1st – 5th grade students are dismissed at 3:04 in the school yard. Parents of students in grades 1st-5th should not enter the school at dismissal. Early dismissals are not permitted after 2:30 pm.
*Attendance Goal – We strive to have every student at school, on time, every day. It is expected that all Comly students will have a 95% attendance rate. If your child misses more than 9 school days (excused or unexcused), he/she will not meet their attendance goal.
*Participation in ExtraCurricular Activities – Students must be at school on time and picked up from school on time in order to participate in extracurricular activities. Beginning this year, students will be excluded from activities before and after school if they have 3 or more unexcused tardies and/or 3 or more late pick-ups in the afternoon.
Remind App – Please sign up for your child’s grade in the Remind app. This is a quick way to share information about upcoming events as well as emergencies at the school. You should sign up for each grade that you have a student in. You should also sign up any family members or friends that would need to be reached in the event of an emergency such as a snow day or weather related early dismissal. The links are below:
I am confident that this will be an outstanding school year and look forward to working with the staff and community to continue the Comly Elementary School tradition of academic excellence! Please continue to watch the Wednesday folder, Remind and Comly website for information about upcoming events including Back to School Night on Thursday, September 12th, 2019 from 5:30PM-7:30PM. I look forward to seeing you there!
Kate Sylvester, Principal
